Washing and Sterlising Bottles

A spotlessly clean feeding bottle is essential.  Making formula in an unclean bottle is very dangerous for baby who can be very sick, poisoned or have upset digestion.

Steps to Follow

  • Wash your hands thoroughly
  • Be sure to have necessary equipment available (tongs, cleaning brush, washing up liquid, steriliser, liquid soap)
  • Empty any old milk from the bottles, take apart the teat and lid and give a brief rinse to all
  • Clean the sink and sterilising machine carefully (empty out old water)
  • Wash empty bottles carefully in very hot soapy water
  • Use a bottle cleaning brush
  • Be careful to get into all rims of bottle and ends of teat – handle carefully to avoid bursting
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water
  • Sterilise using the sterilising machine
  • Be sure to add the correct amount of water according to instructions on machine
  • Leave bottles to dry in sterilising machine  – do not towel dry
  • If there is no sterilising machine boil bottles in clean water in a saucepan for 5 minutes or use sterilising tablets in cold water, according to packet instructions and tablets used.
  • When handling clean bottles be sure your hands are washed and clean
  • Do not handle bottles more than necessary and do not touch inside of bottle
  • or the feeding teat.  Use tongs if possible.A spotlessly clean feeding bottle is essential.

  • Make sure that bottles have tops on when stored in a clean, dry area
  • Ensure you wash your hands before touching these bottles again.
